I was watching the news and it clearly stated that kindergartners are gettting on avrage 3 hours of homework a week. I saw this question, "How can I get my 7 year old to focus in school?" and thought it was silly. The poor thing is 7 years old and cannot fully comprehend why we're stressing him out, he must be confused and worried all the time.

I think we're putting to much pressure on kids 3rd grade and below to be model students. That's to much, their brains havn't developed and they don't understand the meaning of this hard work and probebly don't even remember it within the next 10 minuets.

How do you think so much pressure on little children is affecting them mentaly and physicly?

The problem right there is just that: Too much HOME-work. The school day should be longer so the children can have the teachers help if they are doing work. They should concentrate on helping the students while they are in school and making sure they understand everything.

Another impotant factor is that we need to help children understand WHY they are being taught something and why it will be useful to them in the future.

Japanese kids go to school for much more of the year than we do here. I personally remember coming back from summer vacation and not remembering anything from the year before - especially when it came to Math. It just disappears if you don't keep on practicing. We should follow their example. Plus, if we made school and learning more fun, kids wouldn't even mind going to school longer. In the US it's just endless drilling to prep. them for SAT's, Regents exams, and other standardized tests.

Parents should be more involved in their childrens learning process at home and not just leave the entire thing up to the teachers.

We need to start teaching Second languages at a MUCH earlier age, BEFORE our brains become more "hard-wired" and it's harder to learn. We need to encourage more music participation as well.

Our whole system needs a nice overhaul.

Consider this: a child's mind actually closes as they age. Before 3, a child can pickup any language effortlessly. But scientist have proven that there is a time window that once closed, learning becomes more difficult.

The United States has some of the lowest academic scores in the world. There is something radically wrong with our school system. I personally think the downfall started when socially passing kids became the normal thing to do rather than making sure they knew the material presented to them.

If a child is eager to learn, and l've never seen one that rejected being taught, then let them learn.

Have you read some of the questions and spelling and grammar that these young kids are writing on this thing? I think if you don't start with them young , you lose them. Young children are inquisitive and want to learn new things. If they aren't interested in learning by the 3rd grade level I think you've lost them!Mentaly I think it stimulates their brains, physically it may take a little of their "play" time away. It's far better than sitting them in front of a tv set which I would bet the majority of them would be doing!

I don't think we are pressuring our kids too much... I think they have too many distractions in their environment to put in the proper amount of work into school. 3 hours of homework a week is spent on the kindergarten level, but it probably wouldn't require that amount of time if they weren't watching TV, on a gameboy, the Internet, myspace, etc...

Also take into consideration the source of this information; the news is going to tell you the side of the story that they want you to hear... It is up to the viewer to look at the story from all sides bc the media will not do that for you

**Do you think we're putting to much pressure on little kids in school? **

No.
Too much ritalin and other pharmaceuticals though. I believe that the three hour thing is designed to be a distraction from the television
and such like. The parents can use that time to do other necessary household things. This generation is the most intelligent generation in American history.

Have a nice day.

I have 3 children. I do believe a child should be able to finish their homework in 15 minutes or less. However, at this age group, their brains are like sponges. What goes in, stays there. When they become 14, they don't allow it to go in unless willing. I think they should learn as much as they possibly can, but also let them have down time.

Yes. Kids are being given too much homework. Not only are they becoming STRESSED and pushed into society way to early, but they are having physical problems with their backs from too heavy bookbags. Children in grade 2 are having any where from 1-2 hours of homework a night. This is too much. If we want to lesson suicide problems, drop-out rates, and stress level reduction, then we better lighten up on these children.

ok..that the problems with schools..they are not pushing children enough...like in tennessee the alcoa schools are not strick...when a person with a different race of color acts up he/she wont get in trouble almost at all because it is like being a racist they could just say that you put them in detention becasue of their race...if we could paddle children now-a-days they would be better but no while one child is getting in trouble we are supposed to go to the child next beside them and say what a perfect little child you are being and that would make the other child jealous and they would quit..now that is bull....plus suspinsion now days are just writing sentices sayin i will not misbehave in class ever again...that is easy..that is taking them out of class..like they want!!!...plus some get to stay home i mean thats even better!!! these school systems are not preparing them for the real world they are preparing them to live in boxes by a creek. and teaching them that when someone calls them names to cry.. otherwise you need to push your child more so the he/she can accomplish more. if you dont then this is the cold hard truth your child will be a loser

well they government probably wants to start fresh and put more standards for kids because if they put lower standards they don't do so good. I think i would have done much better in school if they told me that i needed a b average to graduate because when i was in school you needed at least a c average and if you got Ds you still passed. Maybe a little pressure is good for them, but if your a parent and think its to much for your child maybe you should tell their teachers and find a program that works for your child.

What difference does it make? They will become the uneducated educated, thinking just enough to perform tasks at work, but never enough to realize they're well-treated slaves. The school system is a holding pen for everyone under 18.
