bottle on the ground. I was wondering if I should go back inside and sterilize the bottle since it dropped or should I just wipe it off with my shirt to get the dirt off....I am a new dad of an 8 month old

I would say it depends on what the nipple landed in/on. If it's just pavement, a wipe will be fine. Truth is, studies have actually proven that babies who are over protected from germs, wind up having weaker immune systems & more allergy problems than babies who get exposed to a little dirt every now & again. The dirt gives their immune system a reason to make anti-bodies.

Use common sense of course...if you have reason to believe there would be a high concentration of toxic bacteria present, or some substance that would be poisonous to your child, then wash & sterilize the nipple, or get a clean one.

Nice cliffhanger there...looks like you dropped the baby, not just the bottle....

If possible, you should clean the bottle off with soap and water - resterilizing isn't really necessary, but drying off the bottle is. If you are in a serious pinch, just wipe off the dirt. Germs hide in warm and wet places - wet soil bad, concrete good.

Oh my gosh....I thought that you dropped your baby and not the bottle! A little dirt builds up your child's immune system. Just wipe it off, or run it under water to rinse it and give it to your baby. Your baby will be fine.

you scared me there for a minute!!! I thought you dropped the baby!!! Well, i would clean it off. If you have extra nipples in the diaper bag, just switch the nipple and give the bottle to the baby. If not, go back inside and wash it. You don't actually have to wash it, just run it under the faucet...same thing with pacifiers.

A lot of people think the "3 second rule" is ok...

Well your child really isn't old enough to have a "vote" on it. So let me help you with my opinion.

If it fell on dog poo, but was only there for 3 seconds would it be ok?

Well pretty much anything outside, or on the floor could have those germs on it.

My kid? I probably would sterilize. Next time have a second clean one handy? Or less things in your hands.

All these people telling you to clean it by using your own saliva are dead wrong. The human mouth is full of bacteria and putting your childs bottle or binky in your own mouth to clean it is just about as bad (or possibly even worse) than a bottle that has hit the ground!!

That is sad. Running with babies is like running with sissors! Something will go wrong. As for the bottle just wipe it off.

Just wipe the dirt of the bottle. It is OK. I am glad to see that fathers are taking care of their babies, it not just mothers now.
I don't know you, but Iam very proud of you. God bless you.

go and wash it off. Your mouth is as dirty as the dirt the bottle may have touched so don't put it in your mouth to clean it off.
