I have the hard drive from my not so old computer and I'd like to put it in this one, can I do it?
It will need to be formatted to this operating system, do I need anything special to do this? Is there any programs on line I can down load to assist?
I understand I have to make it a "slave" to the master.

Does not need formatted unless you want to... just needs to be compatable with hook up (EIDE, SATA, SCSI, RAID, whatever)

Set jumper in rear to slave and plug it in. It will show up as next available drive letter and everything that was on it, will still be one it.... if you want to format it, you can do so inside windows - right click the drive and choose format.

You mean you want to have both hard drives in one computer? If you slave it, it doesn't need any changes unless they used different file systems, but if they're both Windows you shouldn't have a problem, unless one is SATA and the other is IDE.

Put on an ESD wristband to avoid static electricity damaging your computer, and open it up. Unless they're very large, the drives are probably IDE. The ribbon cable connected to the new drive probably has another connector on it. Look on the old drive for a diagram showing where to put a jumper for Master, Slave, or Cable Select, and make sure it's not set to Master. Then plug in the connector on the ribbon cable and a free power cable -- IDE drives today have connectors that won't fit any way but correctly.

Yes make it slave connect it with cable, and that is all you need. Of course you can download special program about you HDD from vendor site, but in general XP has everything for formatting and setting u your hdd - check in Start/Settings/Control panel/Administrative tools/Computer management Disk Manager. You can partition again and re-format your old hdd from there.

Well depends what type of Data cable is if its EIDE or can be called ATA or if its new type like small red cable for Sata and if u don't need files from it u can format it but if u have some important files u can hook up it as slave and should work fine

I did that. The CPU went out in my old computer, but the hard drive was fine. Now I have teo hard drives in my new computer! I put stuff like music and movies on the second drive to save space.

If you are using Windows, just plug it in after setting jumpers. If you go to my computer, it should show up as a drive letter. Right click and choose format.

You may have to check BIOS settings also.

Easier, buy an external USB housing, (if it is a notebook drive)
Use it via USB interface, it works auto in XP.
