I took dance from age 3 to 10 (ballet, tap, jazz) and now I'm joining again at age 14. I'm really nervous though about catching on with new steps and being as flexible as the rest of the girls. My teacher is very strict when it comes to technique. And it's been so long since I've danced. I'm just really nervous about the whole thing, but I'm positive I want to rejoin. Any tips please?

Congratulations on choosing to rejoin!

Here are a few things that might help you:

If you remember any stretches from your earlier classes, begin stretching and trying to limber yourself up now. It never hurts to stretch before you go to class, too.

If you are going to a new studio, call and find out what the dress code is, e.g., if you need to wear a certain colour leo and tights, particular shoes, etc. Confirming this in advance will help you know what to wear, so you'll be prepared when you arrive at class. Make sure your dance bag is packed up with everything you need, and arrive with plenty of time to prepare.

Make sure to have your hair away from your face, and make sure you wear something that fits you well so that your teacher can see your body and make corrections, if needed.

You'll do great! Remember, your teacher has as much at risk here as you- your teacher will want to continue to have students at the studio so she/he can keep teaching, and will want to have well trained students that reflect well on her/his teaching technique. If she/he offers corrections and critiques, consider it flattering- this means she/he wants you to improve, and is interested enough in your abilities to make sure that you do!

Additionally, your previous dance experience will be a huge help. You'll be amazed at how fast your body remembers things. Try to get a good nights sleep the day before you attend class, so you can focus.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Make sure that you are in a position where you can see the teacher during class.

If you're still not comfortable after the first 2-3 classes, perhaps consider taking a few private lessons. Most studios offer them.

You'll do great. Have faith in yourself, your body, and your abilties.

Oh man, I totally know the feeling. I have been through this so many times before (but I usually join a different one, rather than the same one, for one reason or a another). It is really hard. But my jazz teachers have always told me that I catch on quickly. Just go and relex. You'll catch on quickly and everything from before will come back to you.
Stretching will hurt for awhile, but just keep practicing and soon you'll be more flexible again.

i think yr teacher will cut u some slack since u have been gone for 4 years! don't worry about it and have faith in yourself! u can't just get flexible all of a sudden so don't worry, if yr not as flexible as the other girls then try streching more than u have been and if u haven't been stretching then i would seriously recommend doing so! :) you'll do fine and if this is what u really want 2 do than just go and do your very best, no one can expect any more than that! GOOD LUCK and i hope u have fun. :)

Liverpool will face Lyon it extremely is a stressful one and United will face CSKA Moscow which may be however. whether I assume an United victory, 3-a million... Scorers... Rooney, Fletcher, and an very own purpose late via some Liverpool participant. And Liverpool's 'Skertel will score.

You will do fine. I only danced for one year and that was at the worst studio ever. Then i went to a different studio this year and i was in competition classes during the summer. All the girls in my class have been dancing for like 10 years and i have been dancing only one and i am better than them at somethings (that is the regular class). I would start to stretch now so you can get caught up. If you really want to do it i would.

i was in exactly the same situation just a year or so back. I am 13 and i had just moved house from wales. I needed a new dance school and after two years i still hadnt found the right one. I eventually did and now love it! Everyone is really friendly and i really feel wanted/ part of the school. Just relax and be yourself- you will soon find out if you enjoy it- i did.

Your muscles have memory. Trust in yourself. You are so lucky you started so early. There are many girls who wish they did. You have a great advantage. In no time, you will catch on to everything again. Just believe in yourself.

On a practical note, learn to relax to take away the nervousness and anxiousness. 1) Take deep breaths through your abdomen and exhale slowly and imagine your body relaxed and feeling calm. 2) Stretching a lot before class also helps to calm your body. 3) Before class and during class, visualize (make mental pictures in your mind) that you are doing great in class. 4) Don't drink or eat anything with sugar or caffeine several hours before class. That will make you jittering and make you lose concentration. Eat something lite & nutritious an hour before class so you will have enough energy during class. 5) Before and during class, keep telling yourself you are wonderful, you are doing great and that you will catch on quickly. Repeat it often. 6) Use your excitement as energy to dance well in class. Don't think of it as nervous energy but positive energy that will help you do well.

That's all I can think of right now. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your own ability. It sounds like something really motivated you to go back. Use that motivation to your advantage to do well. Don't be hard on yourself. Be super gentle to yourself. Praise yourself and say loving things to yourself. You will do wonderfully & great and keep telling yourself that over and over.

All the best.

I just turned 14 and started taking ballet again after 7-8 years and I was just as nervous to get started back up again. If I where you I would definetly stick with it, and you may pick it up alot faster since you have alot of previous expierence. I'm so glad i started again! Good luck, don't give up! Good Luck!

Nervous or excited? The right word would be excited! You are very young, you only had a 3-4 year break. You'll be fine. I'm sure your teacher understands that you had a break and won't expect you to be in your ansolute top shape right away. I'm glad to hear you're back to dancing!
