My daughter just called me and told me that she lost the gas cap off of their truck on their way to Va, from Pa. I didn't know what to tell her to do. Can you buy them in an auto parts store or maybe go to a junk yard and find one? Do most of them fit different cars/trucks? Thanks.

Most car parts stores have replacements. Don't get one from a junkyard, might not work well, and a modern gas tank has special pressure relief valves in the cap, it has to be just right.

Not a stupid question at all. Tell her to go to the nearest auto parts store and ask for a cap based on the year and model of her vehicle. She can even get a locking one if she wants. If the cap isn't sealed right, it may turn on the check engine light. She needs one specific to her truck.

Yes you can buy them at auto stores, and in fact Wal-mart even sells them. Just go to the store and pick one up. And for an ever better choice, get a locking one, that way you dont have to worry about someone messing with your gas tank.

Advance Auto or AutoZone sell them. I even seen them in K-mart.

Check engine light may come on because the fuel system will loose vacuum.

When you get new gas cap disconnect battery for aprox 15-20 minutes to clear check engine light.

You can get them at Walmart as well as those other places. You can stuff a rag in the gas entry port temporarily.

I don't know how old the truck is, but newer ones have a spring loaded secondary cap in the entry port to keep debris out. If the truck is fairly new, tell her not to panic and get a cap when it is convenient.

Tell her to find the nearest Auto Zone, or some store like that. Do an internet search for her if you need to, & tell her not to worry. They do sell caps for vehicles & it shouldn't be hard for her to get a replacement. Also, it isn't very expensive, so this is something fairly easy to fix.

Send her to the first auto parts store she sees. Depending on the mechanics of the vehicle that cap may be crucial to repair right away.

If it's from a truck and the color doesn't matter, go to any auto parts store and buy one.

Auto zone or any large car parts place, just call and ask save the gas to drive there, if they don't have it a dealership for that type of car would be the next best bet. (Not a dumb question.. :)
