Chuck is right.
Please note, however, that this will only get you the seedling for a tree. It will take several years for it to mature, and you'll need a male tree and a female tree in order for them to bear fruit.

Put three toothpicks into the sides of the seed and suspend the seed at the top of a glass of water. The water should just touch the bottom of the seed. Keep the water at that level until the roots begin to show. Let the roots grow to a length of about 2-3 inches. Ready to plant in rich potting soil, indoors.

There's two ways: 1) plant in moist soil , seed half-way in dirt with pointy side sticking up 2) Suspend in water with toothpicks at each 90 degree(4), again about halfway. A more compicated is to follow #1 in a paper cup, place saran wrap over seed and secure to paper cup with a rubber band. I use this method on a lot of pants/seeds in my greenhouse. Good luck!

i started my avocado tree by puting the seed into a platic bag with a wet papertowel and setting it on the windowsill right after eating the avocado. (just like in first grade, when you make a bean seed sprout, haha) when the seed starts to root, then put it in soil
