Some billionaires are famous for giving away their riches. They're called philanthropists. Bill Gates is one of them. If I had over a billion pounds, I would give some of it away as well. I mean, who really needs that much money? What could you spend it on?

Most NGOs (Non Governmental Organisations) ask all companies to donate 0.7% of their profits to charitable organisations, which from their point of view, would make their impossible task possible.
Most NGOs survive on goodwill, sponsorship and donations by anonymous people and companies. True philantropists are very few and far between, but one doesn't have to be a millionaire to help.
How many of us have seen shocking footage from around the world showing scenes of misery, desolation and destruction? How many of us actually responded by going to the bank and depositing some money in the relief fund?
When the cry goes out; "Somebody should do something!" we should be looking in the mirror. One pound each from a million people would go a long way to helping. How many of us have received mail through the letter box asking us to sponsor a child in a third world country? How many of us have thrown that letter in the bin?
The truth is many companies do help relieve the plight of those less fortunate than us. The problem is that these donations have to be in secret because of possible political and economic repercussions from other countries which, for their own reasons, wish harm on that grief stricken state.
If Coca-cola, for example, became publically involved in relief to countries such as The Lebanon, Iraq, or Afghanistan, how do you think other countries would react to Coca-cola? It would become a political minefield and as such these companies don't openly give aid.
In famine or natural disaster situations, major companies might be more inclined to participate, but given the cynicism of people in general, the public would say it's only a publicity stunt. They can't win either way.
My own position on this is to give a small donation to whatever relief fund is currently in need. I can't do any more and I admire all those men and women who give so much of their time, expertise and experience to help those in such difficult times.

They do, actually. Bill Gates, the wealthiest man on the planet, has given away more than half of the money he has ever earned and he's STILL the one with the most toys.

Warren Buffet, right up near Mr. Gates at the top, has also given away a substantial portion of his earnings and recently set it up so that most of his entire estate will go to the Bill & Malinda Gates foundation when he passes. Nearly all of it will go to do good somewhere, the vast majority of it to help the poor and disadvantaged.

Those two alone have given away far more than just "a billion or two". More like HUNDREDS of billions over their lifetimes.

Just like me or you they pay tax and if they earn 40 billion this year then they must pay 5 billion in tax .
But
If they earn 40 billion and give away 1 billion to charity they only pay 1 billion tax .
You could get away with the same thing if you earn £5 over your tax bracket you probably have to pay about £25 extra tax , give a fiver to charity and you'll save £20 .
Mad but True !

A lot of them do, the co-founder on Microsoft is one. Most of these people worked very hard for a very long time to obtain this money, and many of them have made their employees rich as well. Some people like to believe money is evil, it's not. The richest 20% in America pay over half the taxes for the country, the poorest pay none. It is a fair system, do not demonize the rich.

Sorry, really fed up to see the deification of St Gates. He was pulled in for anti trust and monopolies but it went away when he finally decided to set up his foundation. Please not forget that he was considered a philanthropist when he stated that he wanted a computer in every school, and then "donated" the computers to schools...of course the schools would then have to buy his system. Remember money is round to go (a) round.

Greed.
Pure and simple Greed. The negative side of human nature. ::grrrr:: But, yeah, I agree. Billionaires should give more to those not as well off as they. They could help make this world a much better place, if they did.
