I've never been accosted by Krishna's at a rest area. The most common activity seems to be going to the restroom. Sometimes, they give out Florida orange juice.

Duh! They welcome you and provide rest for weary travelers. What do you think they do? They are places where you can get your belly's and gas tank filled, use the bathroom, buy souvenir junk you don't need, and all kinds of fun things to make you trip a little less tiresome.
