I like the Liberty Album from H.E. Harris. It has just a few words under each stamp to help you understand the subject of the stamp. Nothing complicated, but then you know if the picture shows an artist or a labor leader or whatever.
You can look at many different choices at http://www.subwaystamp.com . Avoid albums that are bound rather than looseleaf, as you can't add new pages. And I don't like albums that have stamps on both sides of the paper - the stamps catch against each other as you turn the pages, which can do a lot of damage.
Please consider joining th American Philatelic Society - http://www.stamps.org - the monthly magazine alone is worth more than the price of membership.

When I was an avid U.S. stamp collector, I owned a specially made album manufactured in Germany. It cost me over $100 beck in '73. It was a loos-leaf album you could update with annual supplements. The unique thing about it was that instead of having to hinge or mount your stamps, each space had a crystal folder, in which you placed the stamp. This prevented the original gum from coming into contact with the pages, shielding stamp and allowing it to "breathe"
I had gotten a windfall when only 23, and I bought a complete set of Columbians, mint original gum and never hinged! I also paid $3000 for stamp #2 printed in 1847, as well as a set of the Zeppelins. In all I paid about $12,000 for the stamps.
Initially I balked at the idea of paying $100 for a stamp album, but what the dealer said made perfect sense.
"You just spent this kind of money for your stamps. Now you need an album like this one to protect them!"

I definitely recommend the American Heirloom Collection stamp album, by Mystic Stamp Company. I have it myself - it's three binders of cream-colored paper, with illustrated space for the stamps and information about them, page numbers and Scott numbers. And, they have it on sale now for $35, so it's affordable, too! Can't get any better than that!
