1. Jimmi Hendrix - guitar player
2. David Gilmour - Pink Floyd
3. Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin
4. Ritche Blackmore - Deep Purple
5. Tony Iommi - Black Sabbath
6. Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen
7. Alvin Lee - Ten Years After
8. Santana - guitar player
9. Jeff Beck - Yardbirds and solo career
10. Steve Howe - Yes

But don't forget Mark Knoppler of Dire Straits, Rod Price of Foghat, Tom Scholz of Boston, Gary Moore... even Frank Zappa ("willy the Pimp" and Joe's Garage instrumental pieces).

Since Eddie Van Halen was (one way or another) the "teacher" of Joe Satriani, the Metallica and Guns n' Roses guitar men were the pupils of Satriani including Steve Vai; I think the name of Eddie Van Halen cover all the previous names because they have followed his style. Eric Clapton? Knoppler got much potential than Sir Clapton.

How have none of you people mentioned Joe Satriani??!?!?! I mean, COME ON.....

Edit: Funny thing is that Satriani (at least, at one time or another) TAUGHT quite a few of the guys other people have mentioned. Steve Vai, Slash, Kirk Hammett, and Charlie Hunter come immediately to mind.

Also, to a later post's suggestion that Eddie Van Halen taught Satriani. That's not really true. Eddie didn't ever really "teach" Satriani...at least, not through a teacher-student relationship. True, they were contemporaries in the California music scene of the late 1970s - early 80s, thus interacted professionally from time to time, but Joe lived and taught in the Bay Area, while Eddie lived in LA and was a rock star.

True, Eddie was the first to really perfect the technique of two handed finger-boarding (or tapping) and Joe definitely was inspired by that, but Joe's techniques, aside from that type of two-handed tapping, are vastly different from those of Eddie.

P.S. I'm not trying to make Eddie Van Halen sound like any less of a guitar player or musician. Eddie is/was a truly revolutionary guitar player and, in one way or another, has inspired EVERY rock guitarist since 1978....but he was never Satriani's teacher.
