There is an air drying clay that is available in most craft stores, in the children's craft section. I believe it is put out by Crayola It is designed to be easy for a child to work with. The other clays, used for jewelry making, are too difficult for a child to use and aren't paintable.

Try using Sculpey. Also, I have found a seller on ebay who makes the cutest little sprites and faeries. About every two or three weeks she puts one on ebay beginning at $80. Her work usually goes up to $120-$130. The seller's name ebay name is artofvenus. That is one word. You could ask her on Ask Seller A Question. She uses some kind of wire frame and bakes the clay to make these little figurines of people, then paints and dresses them. I don't know how she attaches the wings. She doesn't use molds either. I'm sure she could provide you with some information to help your child. Her artwork is really excellent to look at. I keep her on My Favorite Sellers. I have been adding money to Paypal every payday in hopes of bidding on one because my daughter has posters of pixies and sprites and unicorns, and reads a lot of fantasy novels. Anyway, try ebay for the seller artofvenus.

If you get some Fimo or Sculpey (available at Michael's), you can bake it. It's a little more expensive, but the kids would love using all the different colors--I know I did when I was younger.
