So as to give it more of the intimate, small venue type setting that ECW used to have in it's prime.

It was not to disguise a half-full house. ECW was taped with Raw and is usually taped along Smackdown. If dimming the lights was to disguise the poor attendance wouldn't they dim the lights on Raw and Smackdown too. Even if it was a half-empty crowd they could have easily left the lights on full and disguised this just as well by using certain camera angles at certain times.

It's an old trick to disguise a half-full house. Most WWE house shows are that way. The only time they sell out is when the show's televised. Hopefully the ECW shows will improve with time.
