Explain the value of utilizing the entity relationship model (E-R Model) and the entity relationship diagram (ERD) for relational databases. Is this an advantage or disadvantage? Why?

Using Normalization is an abstract process that doesn't necessarily fit your specific data model perfectly. ER looks at the entities that you really have and allows you to create a data structure based on what entities really exist and any unusual relationships between them.

If you and the people your are working with are familiar with ER diagrams, I think you find that they are useful, however, they do have limitations.

UML was created to overcome some of the limitations of ER and other data description tools.
