IT WILL STOP AT SOME STAGE IN MILLION'S OF YEAR'S TIME AND THEN GRAVITY WILL TAKE OVER AND BRING THEM ALL TOGETHER AGAIN , AND THEN ANOTHER BIG BANG

Anyone who says that the universe is static or that it is infinite did not do their homework. The universe is expanding, and the expansion is accelerating. This has been observed. It is a fact. An infinite universe by definition cannot expand, therefore the universe is finite.

That said, then what is the universe expanding into? Common sense would tell you that if something is expanding, there must be something to expand into. The problem is, our common sense was developed by our experiences on this planet, and does not apply to the universe as a whole. Much about cosmology and advanced theoretical physics goes against any shadow of common sense. If you want to learn about the universe, check your common sense at the door.

The universe is expanding into nothing, using the most literal sense of the word. Nothing means NOTHING, no dimensions, no time, no existence. The universe is simply expanding. Think of the universe as the SURFACE of a sphere, not the volume inside. The surface of a sphere has no boundaries, yet is finite, and can expand, as it does when you blow up a balloon. The best way to begin to understand the nature of the universe is to consider the surface of a sphere.

The universe isn't expanding into anything, it is just expanding. Whether or not it will collapse or continue expanding forever is a question of the average mass density in our universe. Scientists currently think the universe will continue to expand indefinitely.

The universe is expanding into a more infinite space.

It's expanding into nothingness, a void which has no dimensions and no time.

Also, the universe will never stop expanding. Modern physics has shown that galaxies are moving away from us faster than they used to, which means that gravity is not enough to slow them down or hold them at the same acceleration. This means that they will continue to accelerate farther and farther away from us until eventually the universe is infinitely large.

The space is endless, It's a huge massive empty dark place.

When we say that the universe is expanding, we mean that planets, solar systems and galaxies are forming and occuping that empty dark place. It's basically occuping the nothingness of it.
You think of space as infinite, limitless .. and more matter are just forming and occuping a place in the universe.

*So it's the expanding of matter into the limitless space*
That's it .. that's the point ..
Hope that helps !!

it's not expanding INTO anything. there isn't any existance outside the bounds of our universe. In otherwords, at the ege of the universe, all the dimensions cease to exist (no width, length, height, time, etc). When we say the universe is expanding we mean that the very fiber of existance itself is getting larger.

In 1917 Albert Einstein set the pace by postulating his "cosmological principle" that matter is uniformly distributed throughout all space. This resulted in a non-expanding cosmos with space curving back on itself. Others modified Einstein's equations to allow expansion.

So, it may be very well said that the universe is presently static.

Our universe is infinite, which means it has no boundary or edge. It goes on for ever. How ever, pieces within the universe, galaxies, stars, planets, etc. are moving away from each other. The Moon is moving away from the Earth at a rate of 4" per year.

The space that it is creating/bringing about. Read more about it, the big bang, and this strange concept will not bother you. Before space/matter/time the universe 'was' energy, which has no volumetric dimensions.
How many metres or minutes etc is a joule? Simple as that.

Good question that nobody knows the answer to.

Since we cannot currently create a test to determine what is or is not out there, then the only true answer is: "nobody knows".

Never let science become a religion by polluting it with random conjecture, and calling it true!

Science is still full of unknowns. That is where real science starts: with realizing this.
