I suggest m-w.com for vocab issues like this:
Tendril: N- a leaf, stipule, or stem modified into a slender spirally coiling sensitive organ serving to attach a climbing plant to its support
Inscrutable: ADJ- not readily investigated, interpreted, or understood : MYSTERIOUS
Barb: N - a sharp projection extending backward (as from the point of an arrow or fishhook) and preventing easy extraction
Bewilder: Trans V- to perplex or confuse especially by a complexity, variety, or multitude of objects or considerations
Opalescence: ADJ- reflecting an iridescent(a lustrous rainbowlike play of color ) light
Croon: V- to sing or speak in a gentle murmuring manner
Opaque: ADJ- blocking the passage of radiant energy and especially light
OR
hard to understand or explain
Mimicry: N- the action, practice, or art of mimicking (to imitate closely )
Those are exactly copied off M-W.com, so you might want to paraphrase them to use in class. Hope that helps!

3.) I think Barb sounds like something sharp..or for protection, like barbed wire, or the barb of a stingray (RIP Steve).
7.) Opaque is something that isn't transparent, or the opposite, like frosted glass or anything that you can't see through, like a tea coaster, lol
4.) Bewilder is something that is un-imaginable or confused, like "That kid was totally bewildered at the sight of his GCSE papers".
5.) I can't be arsed typing this one, but I searched it < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opalescence @ WikiPedia>
6.) Croon sounds like when you cuddle up to somebody, or show effecion or whatever.
That's all I'll leave :)
Good luck ;)
