In the xy - plane , the equation of line p is y =2x +5. If line m is the reflection of the line p in the x axis, what is the equation of line m?

I am not sure what reflection means, is it the line who intersects from the opposite direction? help!!
thank you

well if you flip it over the x axis, then the y intercept is -5 and the line would be a negative slope, so hmmmmmmmm... it is y= -2x-5. From a geometry standpoint, line m can also be called line p'.

A reflection over the x axis means that if you had it on paper and you folded it along the x axis, the reflection is where the original line touches the other half of the paper.

Here is an example of the reflection
line a

line b

The reflection is a line with the same slope, but on the other side of the axis. The value is the same but the pole (+ or -) is opposite... and thus, y = -2x +5 will make a reflection. So that is what P is. Draw it and see. When you draw the two lines it should make a big X.

--just as a note: the slope comes from the part of the equation where the "x" is.

Reflection refers to it's mirror image on an axis, in this case the x axis.

the equation in this case for line m would be:
-y=-2x-5

the x line goes from left to right. Line M would then be a mirror image of line p. i think so then you start with 1 on the x line and find out what the y is and then work out the equation from there. If you dont understand ask your teacher if you dont get it.

yes reflection will be the point where the slope is opposite so the equation will be y=-2x+5 ok
