Try VisualBasic. Been around a long time, still very much in use, lots of books and online resources. ASP code used on the web is pretty much the same as VB. You can write your own macros in MS Office products too w/ VB.

Try Visual Basic.NET Express (download free from microsoft)

Visual basic.NET (not version 6!) is very easy and forgiving and you can click on the mouse and choose "snippits" that will basically write chunks of code for you, all you have to do is fill in the blanks so-to-speak.

It also tells you the mistakes as you are typing, you can hover over the error and it will tell you what you are doing wrong. It doesn't get any better than for a new programmer.

Visual Basic script (VBS) and Visual basic for Applications (VBA) is easier but harder for a beginner to start with because it doesn't clearly tell you where and what the errors are until you run it.

Forget about BASIC, that is horrible. PHP and ASP in my opinion are too complicated for the beginner because it intermingles with HTML which can result in an ugly mess really quick. C++ can be a bit unforgiving.

I hope I have made a case for VB.NET as a beginning programming language.

I started off with Liberty Basic. It is simple to use and is not that hard to learn. I now program in Liberty Basic, Visual Basic, Python, Delphi, and Visual C++.

If you would like something that will be easy to learn and useful, but beneficial to learning other languages, then I would reccommend you to use Liberty Basic.

Plus; you can download the trial version for free

I would first start off with a BASIC language and then move on towards something like Java, or C/C++. I guess it all depends on what type of programmer you want to become.
