The most interesting part of your question is not the possibility of living in a world without religion, and whether or not this would end all conflicts... but more about the part where you ask "If religion were BANNED...."

From this, another question arises: who would ban it?

If it were banned in the UK or the US, for example, then there would would be both internal and external turmoil. There would still be conflicts with other nations and the religions that come from outside. And within our own countries there would be uproar at the powers above taking away peoples rights to practise their religion. People believe in these things so much that they would fight and die to defend them! In this sense, banning religion could actually cause MORE conflicts!

So how could you put a worldwide ban on religion? Well the only way you could do that would be if you controlled the whole world, and to do that you would have to conquer it all, which means yet MORE conflicts!

Conflict will never end, but we can at least take comfort in the fact that as much trouble there is in the world it is outbalanced by the amount of peace. Conflicts are never really caused by religion, they are caused by human nature (the same thing, incidentally, that causes religion). Everybody is different, and unfortunately, sometimes people who are power hungry or fanatical get into power, and then their hostility becomes widespread. This will continue with or without religion. In short, power causes conflicts, not religion.

No most conflicts are caused by power being sought by one side over another. Religion is just one excuse. Remove that and people would fight over nationality or resources or fishing rights or any other reason.

WW2 was fought between races of the same religions the cold war was about ideologies not religion and came close to Kennedy ending the world during the Cuban missile crisis.

sadly we are a species that unites over a common enemy we are tribal in that respect. Fact is we are just getting better at hurting each other. They call it progress!!!!

Religion by itself is not the problem. It is the people who wish to control the followers of that religion that are the problem. Until the human race realises that their personal god is within, then those that control, will have power, and sadly, if you eliminate one, others will replace them. I suspect banning all sales of all arms would have a more radical effect.Do not tell me it would be a disaster for the economy, as war, the effects and repercussions thereof costs much more money but more importantly that old fashioned idea of trust. So ban the bombs and let individuals look to their own consciences.

No it wouldn't end all conflicts, the human race would just find something else to disagree about instead. Differences between cultures etc. Religion is just used as an excuse to have differences. I remember what my R.E teacher said to me at school. "god is a like a mountain and people see that same mountain from different sides" that is what i think about religion.

Definitely not. Almost all war is over resources/wealth or a combination of resources/wealth and something else. For example Israel/Palestine is over resources (water is the biggest one), wealth (land), and religion/ethnicity. Iraq is all about resources (oil). Terrorist threats against the US are about resources and power - anger that insurgents have about the US having so much of both and using it to shape other countries (whether you think its right or wrong, that's what the US does).

This is not to say there is never any use of religion in such conflicts, but generally that is only be by misuse of religious principles. For example there are many Islamic people who disagree based on their own religious principles with extremist acts that others say are tied to their Islamic faith.

Nobody has the right to ban religion, that's a crazy thought. If people dont agree with the overall majority religion practiced in a country, then get out of it, that's why we have oceans. Live in the country that your prefered religion is practiced. That's what I think anyway :)

Yes it would.all the the wars and conflict in the world boil down to religion.
Sadly the church is like any other business, its there to make money.Have you ever been into a church and walked out without putting money in the collection box and there is a lot of political issues behind the church.
I think we should all go back to worshipping the sun at least you can see it and who can argue with that?

No. If religion was banned, there would be mass chaos. Religion gives people a sense of hope. (i will not bash on any one, nor promote another...it's simply true for all.) If you take away that hope, then what is the point in living? There would be no reason to feel the sting of a conscience, nor to uphold any form of standards. True, there are fights over beliefs. Maybe one is right, maybe they all are. Maybe we are all missled. But if we are, isn't it better to live in blissful ignorance?

(In addition, those who are truly passionate about their beliefs won't give them up. They will hold on to them to the death, causing further strife. Best to keep them and the petty arguments than to make half the world criminals.)

Money is the subject of a lot of conflict too!
Religion is the subject of conflict caused by people. The fault lies with people, not religion!
