How old is steven in "spies" by michael frayn?

im doin my AS this year on this book, and i was wondering at the start of the book when he's looking back to when he's a child, to what age was he looking back to?

Good question, I have done that recently with Empire by G.Vidal. But when you wrote "spies" with out a capital it has taken me 2 sec. to figure out your question.
Age of character can be detected by noun words too. Name of car, historical events, description in dress or decor will tell us more about time-lines.
