I really think that education is only a partial key to stopping drup abuse. Seeing the results of drug abuse may help some (it did help me) but many children live through it, see the consequences on a daily basis and still wind up stuck in the same rut. For many years I have seen little 8-10 year olds shouting the mantra "just say no" wearing their ribbons, knowing the answers to all of the questions regarding the dangers of drugs and pledging sincerely that they will never do drugs, yet a few years later , at least half or more of these SAME kids are lining up to get high.
Somewhere in between, the drug education fixxles out, parental involvement gets weaker, peer pressure takes over, at the point when preteens and teens self esteem gets weak , no one is there to catch them when they fall. Attitudes change and there are few that are standing in the gap for these children and doing what it takes to ward of the dangers. By this time a lot of these teens feel they know all they need to know, they are grown up and expect to be treated that way but do not realize they are not emotionally mature enough to handle the consequences of their adult actions, no one is there guiding them through this (another good example is all the teen pregnancies- they want the right to have sex but how many are on here freaking out and having not a clue what to do when they get pregnant or some kind of disease) They know all the facts - that is not the problem- They think they can handle it- they will prove that those things will not happen to them because they will deal with it more responsibly or better than those who were poorly affected. These kids need mentos, those who will help them to make responsible choices, those who will give them room to make adult decisions but putting their energies into something productive rather than feeding or deadening the flesh- something to make them achieve great things and feel positive about those acheivements so when they are ready to be on their own they are emotionally ready to handle the peer pressure and trials of everyday life

They wouldn't be a junkie at that point in time, if it was their first hit. I don't think anyone gets into it thinking they will become a junkie, they would be crazy to aspire to that.
