8 Simple Rules could have been the funniest show on TV if John Ritter hadn't have died. They tried to make up for it by adding David Spade (who is funny, but not in this setting) and James Garner, but it's just not as funny. The first episode when they wrote his death into the show was the saddest episode of TV I have ever watched. Mostly because I have been a huge fan of John Ritter since Three's Company in the 70's & 80's.

The actor that played the dad, John Ritter, passed away. So they wrote that into the show. They killed the dad off by giving him a heart attack in the middle of the grocery store.
