I'm thinking I might want to learn. I think it is such a neat instrument. Is it expensive? Hard to learn?

Have any of these people ever played an accordion?

I found it easy to learn, fun to play, and very satisfying in general. Lessons help, but I think you could easily teach yourself. The bass buttons appear complex but are easy to learn and allow you to create chords much more easily than on a piano or guitar.

In most parts of the U.S. the piano accordion is most common, but button accordions are widely used in norteño music, and many other styles exist. The instruments aren't expensive, but I would try to find one available in your area that you can try rather than ordering one.

Should you choose the piano accordion, I found this series of books to be very helpful, from the absolute basics to very complex songs: http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_detail.html?item=3511586

Just like every other instrument it takes hard work and dedication to be able to play it well.

They are reletively inexpensive so I'd say go for it.

it's the hardest instrument to play. it takes two hands to bend a note on a guitar. with two hands - more specifically 8 fingers, you can produce 12 notes - all different.
you have to know what u r doing, you must play without being able to see your LeftHand.

u can play simple !-IV-V-I songs by locating the cut key and playing a major bass behind it. the dominant and subdominant basses are fittingly one row higher or lower, respectively. so now you may accompany yourself for campfire songs.

mastering this takes 5 minutes and constitutes more than most strummers can produce, so Go for It.
the RH can be very fast so practice your scales by starting on any key and then doing the whole whole whole half wwh formula across an entire octave.

play modern music. and develop your ear. only deal with reputable Accordion dealers. expect to pay a thousand for a used Italian-mae box. I have a Bell a Pancordion and a couple hohners.
good luck
