My elderly neighbor was challenged by a gentleman friend to come up witha list of all the snakes with given names in literature. She was born in the Chinese year of the snake, which is the subject that led to this challenge. She can only think of the snake in the Jungle Book. I googled "Snakes with names in fiction", but it didn't look promising. I also tried wikipedia. No luck. If this doesn't work out, I'll try my local librarian in hopes of finding a pertinent reference book. Any suggestions on where and how to find the answer either online or in a book? Barbara has 10 days left to come up with the list. Many thanks.

NAG- The Cobra from Rikki-Tikki-Tavi
NAGAINA-The Cobra from Rikki-Tikki-Tavi
KARAIT- the Dusty Brown Snakeling from Rikki-Tikki-Tavi
King Hiss-From HE-MAN
Thusla Doom- James Earl Jones charachter in Conan that changes into a snake. There is alo a site on Wikpedia that lists Fictional Snakes. Some of these are not on it. For instance NAGINI AND NAGAINA are not the same snake.

You'll likely do better in the children's section of the library. Which is a break for you because the books are so short and so easy to read. There are any number of books featuring different animals, and most of the animals seem to have names. How commonly known they are is another question, but this might give Barbara a few names for her list.

Ouroboros was and is the name for the Great World Serpent, encircling the earth. From myths from around the world.

Satan of course from the Bible.

the serpent Jormungandr, from the myth of Yggdrasil.

It's a difficult quest - best of luck.

Good one....
there's a book on amazon.com about snakes in folk tales and literature, I'd bet that would have some names:
