It could actually be pretty easy. If she had listed you as a joint signer on the account, you would have full and equal access to it. To find out, simply go to the bank with your ID and explain the situation. If you are listed as a signer, they will be able to tell you. If you are not listed, they won't tell you anything about the account, even if it ever existed or not.

However, if you are listed as a beneficiary, it could be slightly more complicated. In order to claim any money that might have been left in your name, you will most likely need to supply a copy of the death certificate. Again, be sure to have your ID with you.

Overall, it never hurts to ask, the worst they can tell you is that they can't tell you anything, and then you're in the same boat you are right now!

Good luck and sorry about your friend!

If the account has laid dormant for a period of time, it may have been turned over to the state's abandoned property office. Google the state and "abandoned property" to locate their website. You should be able to submit an enquiry on-line that will tell if there's anything in your name. If there is, there will be full instructions on how to file a claim.

Good luck!

P.S. Be careful. There are scammers out there who will "find" this for you and charge an outrageous finder's fee. The information is publicly available; there's NO REASON to ever pay anyone for that service.

Try going to the bank and ask about it.
