There were many reasons. Some to escape religious persecution, some where dumped there as punishment, most of them were there to escape the country in which they lived. For Example it was illegal after the Scottish highland uprising for the the Scotsman's to wear his kilts. I think governments like America, Canada and Australia have actually done more to civilize Europe and Great Britain in regards to human rights just by our being. Some came for opportunity, the reasons are almost as numerous as the people.

Religious freedom.

In the 1600s religion was a HUGE part of people daily lives. It drove most every decision. In that period, the church became so powerful it oppressed people to such levels that it became unbearable. An unknown land with unknown possibilities became an attractive option.

for many the choice was to starve in the homeland, or attempt a better life here, for others the choice was to get hung in the homland, or get shipped here for cheap labor, for some they were just sold here to work as free labor. Those doing the shipping probably moved here eventually cause they were making too much money to have it all shipped back.

freedom of religion was one of the biggest reasons. Then there was land opprotunities, a chance to start a new life. There was raw matierials and cotton grew really well...so it was worth it money wise. and England was too populated.
