use yahoo messenger. download it from http://messenger.yahoo.com
and install it. then add your friends there. your firends must also use a messenger that works with yahoo network, like yahoo messenger or gaim. after installation open yahoo messenger and double click on one of your contacts and type your message into the openned window.
if you use linux operating system, use gaim. it connects to msn, yahoo, irc, icq , ... at once. :D

You both have to have yahoo messenger
