The oil on their hands not only tarnishes brass and makes it unsightly, but it also deadens the sound of the bells.

My best guess would be so they all look professional and to not get finger prints on the polished bells. I'm sure they are 100% cotton.

The oil in your fingers will tarnish the brass bells.

I use to volunteer with a group of retarded adults who played the bells by following letters on charts held in front of them.
