John Wilkes Booth was a Confederate sympathizer. To him assasinating Abe Lincoln would be revenge for the South losing the war and would hopefully in his mind destabilize the North. Security back then was pretty lax so Booth over powered the guards and snuck through the curtain wrestled with Lincoln and fired a Davis model Derringer into the back of Abraham Lincoln's head.

Because thats where he was at the time. And thats where that band of rogues planned it. They were mad the North won the Civil War.
People complain that Iraq is still a mess after a few short years. But people may not know that some former confederates caused problems long after the Civil War. In fact they are still flying the flag down here in the South.

John Wilkes Booth, a well-known actor and Confederate sympathizer, was actually part of a conspiracy to decapitate the federal government. The group had intended to assassinate Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William Seward all in the same night. However, if I remember correctly, the man sent to assassinate Johnson lost his nerve, and Seward fought off his would-be assassin.

Remember that John Wilkes Booth was a famous actor at that time. He had performed at Ford's Theater many times and was intimately familiar with its layout.

Also, as a famous actor, he knew no one would question him wandering around the backstage area and private staircase to the balcony where Lincoln sat.

a public place is always the best for an assasination. It creates confusion to hide in afterward, offers a mulitude of suspects if done right.

And it was known he was going to be there. It was a habit he and the wife had. Bad thing for a public official, especially one that was hated by many.
