dont know about websites, but the best place to start is with city records. u can go or call the city planning office, or industrial foundation, and they can give you a rundown of ownership dating back to the original owners - usually. also ask older neighbors - they usually like to talk about such things to anyone who will take the time to listen. old folks are lonely a lot. good luck!

First port of call should be the Land Registry who can show you who previously owned it, if owned, then you can track previous inhabitants via Family history sites, Census etc.

If rented more difficult, could perhaps look inarchives of electroal reigster to see who lived there before and then do as above.

Find out who holds the deeds of your house (it's usually whoever owns it, or if not them, their lawyers) and that should tell you a lot.

If you go to zillow.com you can find out about how old the house is and when the last purchase was and stuff.
