I think Stuart Townsend was all around more realistic for the part. Lestat was made a vampire when he was still in his teens. Tom Cruise was in his 30's and just not the right age to play him. Stuart also gave off more bisexual vibes than I think Tom Cruise ever will be capable of.

Having been a fan of the books, Tom Cruise portrays the character much closer to what I imagine Anne Rice had in mind. I'm sure she had some say as to the casting, as she wrote the screenplay for "Interview". I've never liked Stuart Townsend as an actor. I suppose my opinion is also biased as I was so disappointed by "Queen". They destroyed the best book in the Vampire Chronicles on the big screen.

Townsend - I thought Cruise wayyyy overacted Lestat. He made him seem like a prancing fop. I didn't see Interview for a really long time because of him, and because I love the book so much, and I was ultimately as disappointed as I had thought I would be.

Townsend....hands down...not only the better actor pound for pound...but he nailed the essence of L'estat. I can easily see him...back against the tree...his hounds by his side...fending off the wolfpack...blades dealing death... and later on being at his mother's deathbed....bringing her across...and becoming her lover...
Cruise is known for blowing 'meltdown scenes'...just watch the pivotal scene in Minority Report where the precog played by Samantha Morton(beautifully exquisite performance) ...takes him and his wife through what would have been his son life if he had lived...and you will see what I mean. Sheesh!
Cruise was hair-raisingly good in 'Born on the Fourth of July'...'Magnolia'...and awesome in 'Eyes Wide Shut'.
As a buisnessman he has been without peer for at least a decade as an actor in the deals he has made for himself...but next to Stuart as an actor...especially in the role of L'estat....no contest.
