Sometime, in the not too distant future, may be able to preserve life so that "natural" death (dying from old age) does not occur. Also some forms of bacteria and viruses can enter a state that keeps them alive for many thousands of years (who knows what this limit is).

Because every living thing is going to die at some point. Therefore, a characteristic of every living thing IS the ability to die.

beings are not born & hence not die either. It is the illusion of the mind.
It is similar to turning a computer on & shutting it down.
You see activity when computer is on.new instances are created each time it starts and it all disappers when the computer is turned off. Life is similar but not exact.
it is a journey from the unknown to the known and to the unknown again with time as the defining point.
Time is the dimension which also becomes irrelevant when the collective human mind is gone.
However time is still true & does not get transformed like objects

It's more linguistic than scientific, but else can you think of all living things share but the ability to die?

It is part of the scientific definition of life. Fire follows most, but not all parts of the definition. Fire is not alive. By scientific definition, God is not alive. But, that is science.
