Why don't you explore this at a health food store. A while back
tryptophan was thought to be a sleep aid. In quantities I heard it could also be carcinogenic.

Many people sleep 3 to 5 hours and wake up. It's a symptom of stress and maybe depressing stress. Get up and do something interesting. Check TV, radio, the net. the newspaper, a book. Don't get upset because you're not sleeping. If you lose enough sleep you'll probably make up for it. Pills are not the answer. A hot shower and fresh sleeping clothes after you're up awhile might make you sleepy.

Perhaps something that you are eating or drinking is disturbing your sleep. When I have a couple glasses of wine with dinner I find that I also wake up after 4-5 hours. When I don't have wine with dinner, I find that I sleep the night. You also didn't state your age, which can be a factor on the amount of sleep your body requires. Also, as we age our bodies react differently to many things. The Internet has many sites dealing with sleep. Your smart not to resort to pills right off. Perhaps your Doctor can also be of some help.
Good Luck-

Yes there is something that you can do for this. Go to your local healthfood store and buy a product called liquid calcium/magnesium . It's made by a company called Bluebell. Take it about an hour and a half before bed and it should help. Dr. Andrew Weil reccomends buying a sound machine , you know the kind with ocean waves, rain etc.I have one and it works to drown out noisy neighborhood sounds.Drugstores usually have them in around Christmas time , Sears or JC Pennys might have them too. Guaranteed to knock you right out, lol!Good luck.

Maybe you aren't getting enough exercise. Stretching before you go to sleep can help you unwind. I know i get really sore when I sleep and it helps with that too. Other than that, if theres one thing I learned in the Army its that almost every ailment is the result of poor hydration. Try drinking more water. If nothing else, the hydration will keep you from looking tired!

Kava kava root is an excellent natural sleep aid that's readily available in tablet form. When I know I may have trouble sleeping straight through the night, I take two of them before bed -- works wonders. Also, taking calcium just before bed helps a great deal with quality of sleep.

You might try taking 1-3 mg of melatonin. It helps some people stay asleep longer. I also take 50 mg of 5-HTP and have improved the quality of my sleep. If you are on any prescription meds however, clear both these supplements with your pharmacist or doctor first!
Good Luck!

Maybe you need a better mattress. Maybe your bed-partner is restless and turns a lot and wakes you up. Maybe you need to use the bathroom. Whatever it is that is causing it, work on solving the cause. I can identify. In fact, I hope you get some good suggestions which will help me too.

i do the same thing... invest in a good pillow, nice soft smooth sheets (300 thread count or more), a white noise machine and right before you go too bed spend 15 to 20 minutes massaging your hands and feet, i invested in a little vibrating massager that only weights about 1 lb and use before bed. you also might try buying some really really soft footie socks and wearing them to bed. get your bedroom temp just right and avoid sugary food and alcohol just before bed as this will mess up your blood sugar and can disrupt sleep too.

good luck

I use Melatonin supplements. Take 1 tab. approx. 1 hr before bedtime. You will fall into a natural sleep with no morning grogginess. You can purchase them very inexpensive at Wal-mart.
