I don't mix well with cars.Between being hit by a semi, a train, sideswiped by a car, a couple of head ons and a few other fender benders, it's no wonder I don't drive anymore. Oh, don't get me wrong, I can drive, but just don't have a car at the moment. Doubt I will ever again. Oh yeah... hit twice by cars riding a mt bike.

I'm thinking a motorcycle should be the next transportation adventure. Anyway, I'm considering getting one in the Spring, either a 250 or 500 scooter (Piaggio or Vespa) or an enduro motorcycle. Starting my research now.

Any suggestions?

I guess it's really a choice between the thrill of power and speed vs. relative boredom, just putt-putting down the road at 30 mph.

First, with your history, should you be considering a bike? lol But perhaps those accidents weren't your fault.

Second, take the safety course or some instruction. You'll learn to ride, and you'll find out whether this is something you really want to do.

After that, you'll be more ready to pick one out. In the meantime, be thinking about what you want out of a bike. Do you want exhilarating rides on a bike that can read your mind and respond accordingly? Get a sportbike. Do you want longer comfy trips or even short commutes? Get a street/standard/cruiser.

Do you want mad power and acceleration (sport bike)? Do you want comfort but still a good bit of power and acceleration (anything but a twin)? Do you just want enough hp to get you going (twin)?

Once you've figured all that out, we can start recommending specific models.

my personal fave in the lower end cc range is the kawi 500. Although, if you're a bigger guy, this is not the bike for you. It's a little small. Although a very nice fit for the ladies. It's a gorgeous cruiser that rides smoothly. Also, compared to a Vespa, the price isn't much more, and in my opinion, you'd be getting an actual bike, not just a scooter. (Never been a big fan of scooters) Check em out anyways. Definately worth a look.

Yikes. With your luck, I would definitely recommend getting a full set of safety gear - not just the helmet, but the gloves, boots, jacket, and pants too. Gear made especially for riding offers a lot more protection than street clothes.

I also recommend taking the MSF class, or its local equivalent. That's a course held over a weekend where you practice riding a bike and get a lot of tips on safe riding. Pay attention to those tips... and pay a lot of attention to traffic. 'Cause traffic won't pay attention to you. One more experienced rider than me once advised, "Ride like half the people can't see you and the other half want to kill you."

Piaggio / Vespa is a good, established scooter company. And all four of the Japanese bike companies offer quality roadgoing counterparts to their dirt bikes. Either option would be a great choice for a beginning rider.

Considering your inability to avoid vehicles hitting YOU, I sould suggest your stay in something with as much iron surrounding you as possible.

A bike is inherently more dangerous. That's a given that many of us are ready to accept. But you? Your paragraphs read like you are a disaster magnet!

Did you know that insurance rate can go up for a person who has too many accidents, even if NONE are that person's fault? The insurance company's figure that a good driver should learn how to stay out of a bad driver's way.

Hit by a train? Let's see. HOW does one avoid that?

I think you should get an enduro off-road type bike and ride on the grass. With your luck, you would be road pizza in a matter of minutes.

Hopefully you can test ride one first but you may find a scooter a bit under-powered . What type of riding do you plan to do and how much do you wish to spend . Have you ridden before ?

If you have bad luck on the road, I wouldn't advise getting a motorcycle. Maybe you should ask: which life insurance policy should I take out?
