I have seen contraptions like this referred to as "machines" or "inventions" and have seen stuff like this in children's movies where the geeky kid comes up with something like this as his "experiment". Does this type of contraption have a specific name?

It's called a Rube Goldberg machine, named after a cartoonist who drew them.
