Because labors (back in the day) didn't get to wear white. White collar workers were considered bankers, politicians, etc. Labor Day is a day for the Blue Collar workers such as factory workers, farmers, etc.

You know I saw this question last night. There is not a law that states you can't wear white after labor day. I live in Arizona and after Labor day it is still in the 100's temperature wise. I think everyone can choose what they want to wear at anytime. If anyone is going to judge you, then they better take a look at themselves. So, wear white and be happy! God bless you!

That is an old custom. The fashion rules have changed and you can wear white year round. Some people use an off-white or cream for the winter.

White after Labor Day
An old custom prohibits the wearing of white after Labor Day. The custom is rooted in nothing more than popular fashion etiquette. In actuality, the etiquette originally stated that white shoes were the taboo while white or "winter white" clothes were acceptable. This custom is fading from popularity as it continues to be questioned and challenged, particularly by leaders in the fashion world. "Fashion magazines are jumping on this growing trend, calling people who 'dare' to wear white after Labor Day innovative, creative, and bold. Slowly but surely, white is beginning to break free from its box, and is becoming acceptable to wear whenever one pleases. This etiquette is also compared to the Canadian fashion rule of not wearing green after Rememberance day."

It's an old outdated fashion rule. Of course there has always been "winter white", more of an ivory color. I myself dress as weather permits, it stays warm here late into fall so I am still wearing my summer clothes. I wear white all year long as long as it is suitable attire for the weather and whatever I am doing.

Because it's so close to the Fall and that isn't a Fall color. White isn't to be worn before Memorial Day either. It's just an old ritual.

You'll get lost in the snow! Actually, according to "What Not to Wear," it's okay to wear while after Labor Day.
