First of all, the population is NOT set to double by 2050. Nowhere even close.

The maximum capacity for human life depends on technology, but we easily have the technology to support twice the current population already - and I mean supporting "sustainably". Yes, there are still people who starve, and probably will be in 2050 too. However, hunger is only a problem in areas that are war-torn or have hopelessly corrupt governments.

The problem isn't overpopulation, it's criminally poor governance.

I think eleven billion, or else there won't be in the capacity of food for all of them, and we'll have to cut down all the forests just to put them all.
But wars, diseases and hunger control the balance of the human population.

it is hard to put an exact number on, but look at it this way: if everyone on earth right now consumed like an american, seven earths would be required to support them. As nations develop their consumption increases; china, for example, is increasing its coal and petro use to support bigger and better lifestyles for more people, and india will easily reach a billion people in our lifetime. It is my belief that the carrying capacity of earth has been or is about to (quickly) be reached.

I wonder if they'd make a maximum capacity sign if it got too high. :p
