This isn't intended to be a rude question - so please don't be insulted. I don't have any piercings myself. I'm just curious about this for some reason. A random thought - nothing more.

Has anyone with body piercings ever had an awkward experience in an airport where you had to remove your piercings?

You normally do not have to remove any body jewelry when passing through a metal detector. I have my ears and belly button pierced and recently flew out of state with no problems. I don't think anyone should ever have an awkward experience, I guess maybe unless you have the biggest piece of metal you can find sticking out from your ears, but along with my piercings and other jewelry like a watch and wedding ring, there are no problems passing through airport metal detectors. Even passing through with braces won't set detectors off....so I guess you're pretty safe.

Sometimes, some detectors are sensitive enough to detect piercings but not all are. That was a most interesting time for my cousin once, he had his special area pierced (between the legs). He had to go to the restroom with a TSA security agent who had to watch him take it out (to make sure it wasn't a bomb or something they would try to get rid of instead rather than get caught, so that they could try again later). He always takes it out now before going to an airport.

Do people with earrings have to take them out before going through a metal detector? No. Body piercings are the same, unless you are talking about people with the gaged piercings and have things like big pad locks in their ears or something like that. Then probably.

Well I have my bridge pierced ( top of my nose between my eyes just in case you weren't familiar) and I also have my nose pierced twice and I haven't had to remove my piercings at an airport before. I bet someone will do something stupid and ruin that luxury for me though. :-P

Nope, I have piercings and travel. No problems to date! But if you get arrested at the airport then you will have to take out all of your piercings for booking.

If it gets detected, then yah, they probably would, but most metals used for body piercings are'nt detectable, so they wouldn't cause any awkward situations. Atleast thats how most manufacturers make them.

I have two holes in my ears but i was told to take them off just in case. but i traveled from LAX so maybe its because it's a major airport.
