Everything takes practice, practice and more practice to get better at it. To help you get better at swimming, you should try to find a instructor for help. The best techneques to get better at swimming are to play games in 4 feet water, go to a local pool to practice and asking a lifegard will be fine, know how to float for 1 minute at first, then 3 minutes, after that, you should know how to stay underwater for at least 10-30 seconds(the longer the better), start with a noodle(best not, people may laugh at you so you should insted use a kickboard) and just do freestyle kicking to one end of the pool to the other end of the pool. After you do that very well for 2 or 5 times, then start to use your hands with the freestyle stroke and remember that freestyle goes like this:
start out with a good kick from the wall and put both hands on the kickboard, then start to get your right hand up from the kickboard and make a rotation and put it back on the kickboard(when you are swimming without a kickboard or with nothing to support you, then you should put your hands in front and always get your pinky out of the water and thumb when your arms go back in the water) and then do the same with your other arm. Remember to breathe while you bring your arms into the air.
Now, you should try to do the freestyle until you master it or you are very good at it and move on to backstroke. Here's how it's suppose to go:

Breaststroke is best for keeping going longest or swimming underwater. Front Crawl is the fastest.

If possible, try swimming in the sea (where safe) of a pool with a wave machine to build up endurances. Also, try swimming long distances, say 32 lengths (a half mile) in one go, building up to a mile. Make sure to make your strokes really clean cut and try to lift your arms clean out of the water and keep them bent at the right angle when doing the front crawl.

Good luck.

Practice. Any ways which stroke are you talking about. Try to improve how you swim by improvising a little.

Buy arm bands and don't let anyone tell you that you don't look cool! wear them everywhere you go just in case of a freak flood.
