Not much except to pay it. If you file bankruptcy, they can then sell your debt to someone else, and you have a whole new debt. Bankruptcy does not clear the debt, it merely prevents the from collecting from you, but someone else can through a transfer. Sorry, been there, done that. $120,000 from being on life support and in a coma for six weeks with a bacteria infection of the heart.

MEDICAL BILLS DO NOT GO ON YOUR CREDIT RECORD, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY, THEY CANT DO ANYTHING IF YOU DONT PAY..
i just got a brand new computer and a used really really nice car and got approved for my auto loan and financing for the computer.. and my credit is horrible due to having none.. but i've had a baby and didnt have insurance either.. my medical bills werent on my credit report.. they cant just turn people away.

Set up a payment plan with the hospital. Call a local church or find help with the bill.

You should contact the hospital and tell them you need to apply for aid. They should be able to send you an application. I believe all hospitals offer this service. Just explain your situation and they should be able to help you. Rich people donate money to help those of us without resources. Best wishes and Congrats!

Negotiate with the hospital. Most hospitals will cut the price and allow for payment plans.
