For its time, Babylon was magnificent - perhaps the greatest city in the world until the rise of the Greek city states. However, you cannot compare it to the modern age. Everyone below the nobility would have an annual wage and standard of living far below that of modern America's poor simply because of all the things available to us today and the ease with which we can produce food compared to back then.
