A car enters a tunnel that is 100 meters long with an initial speed of 20 m/s. If the car exits the tunnel at a speed of 30 m/s what was the average accelaration of the car while it was in the tunnel?

How long does it take to go through the tunnel?
avg speed in tunnel = (20 + 30)/2 = 25 m/s
25 m/s for 100 meters = 4 seconds.

Change in velocity = 10 m/s over 4 seconds = acceleration of 2.5 m/s^2

The average speed in the tunnel was 25 meters per second. The time spent in the tunnel is approximately four seconds (if the acceleration is uniform, the time is actually a bit more than that, but it takes calculus to figure it out), so the car increased its speed by 10 meters per second in four seconds, so the acceleration is 2.5 meters per second per second.

Average velocity = (20+30)/2=25 m/s
to travel 100 m with speed 25m/s 100/25=4 sec
net velocity gain within 4 sec is 30-20=10m/s
so average acceleration is 10/4=2.5 m/s^2
