1-4%, depending on the country and the survey. 1 in 10 is ridiculous

swot's claim is totally unreliable. it all depends on who your friends are. you can't make estimates based on who you hang around with, as it's bound to be biased

my question the other day was along these lines. my point was you can't rely on the statistics because you can't gauge how many people will stay in the closet if they are asked if they are lgbt.

going by the hundreds of lgbts i know, i would guess, and yes it is only a guess, that most people are bi to a greater or lesser extent, and that the majority of people are not heterosexual.

i am a lesbian, so i have no real vested interest in thinking that most people are bi: it's just surprising how many apparent str8s and gays are actually bi. i used to fancy men slightly too, went off the idea for life ten years ago, lol. i arlways preferred women anyway and i would never have settled down with a man, never could have fallen in love with a man. as for falling in love with women, my heart is battered, lol, so you would think it would make more sense to get a man: computer says no..... ;o)

btw, isn't the saying: "1 in 10 of married men are gay"?....

GBLTT movement has supported a 15% rule of thumb number in the past based on some questionable survey results. Some more "extreme" advocates have declared 20% to be the "true" number. The conservatives actually provide the highest answer. Using their own criteria of anyone who has ever engaged in a gay act, contemplated at any time of their life having any sort of sexual relation with a member of their own sex (including kissing), then upwards of 90% of all men are gay and something near that figure for women. Naturally, this means that most Christians fundamentalists, Republicans and conservatives are gay by their own defining standards. Neat, eh?

US census data for ppl openly willing to admit they are gay/les is 3-4%, meaning that's the minimum. Not sure but that stat may be based on registered domestic partner registries. Many put the number at more like 10%. Bisexuality is a much bigger number depending how you define it. Some attraction to the same sex probably accounts for most of the population. Actually practicing and completely bi, probably around the same percent as totally gay or totally straight.

In the UK it is 1 in about 8.5. This is based on the 2001 Census. However, judging by the number of 'closet' homsexuals, this is expected to be about 1 in 8.
The question is, how many people are 'out' as LGBT? Im sure there are many more who are still lurking in the depths of their wardrobes, or, who have chosen to adopt a heterosexual way of life. Either way, does it really matter?

The best bet is the US Census. It is estimated that about 3 or 4 percent of the US population is homosexual. It's really a tough number to nail down as many closeted. If the closeted population were included I'm guessing we'd be more around 6 - 10 percent.

Last I heard 3% of the American population were gay, (this doesn't include bi). The 1980 census said 240,000,000 people lived in the United States. 240,000,000 X .03 =7,200,000. If any other geroup of people 7.2 million strong believed in somthing it would become a protected law whats up in this country?

The estimate for GID people is about 1 in 36,000. The figure frequently suggested for gay men is 1 in 10.
Kinsey suggested that 1 man in 4 would have at least one sexual encounter with another male during their lifetime. I think that is conservative.

1 in 10, for exclusively, or almost exclusively, homosexual men is a reliable, if conservative figure. Lower for lesbians. If you include men who could enjoy a sexual/romantic encounter with another guy, then you're looking at 30% of the population.
There's no reason to suppose that the proportion varies according to race or era, and in societies where homosexuality was not stigmatised (e.g. ancient Greece, pre-moern Japan) literature attests that it was much more prevalent than 10%.

The percentage changes with every person you ask and every source you look up. It's very taboo to a lot of people, so they make up the number to fit their beliefs. Also, not everyone who is LGBT is out, so it's near impossible to know for sure.
