> etc... (including Shakespeare, The Beatles, Richard Branson) never went to university (and never would been taught what they implicity knew) and, bearing in mind that even the very top universities regularly churn out students who can barely come up with an original thought, and have to rely on spellcheckers and other people's essays, isn't it time that we stopped pretending that university students are necessarily the creme de la creme?

i agree with your arguement yet it could also be said that the people who go to university are taught about things that wouldn't make you famous such as science.
There are different types of intelligence some of which you can't be neccessarily taught, so it is true that university students are not the creme de la creme. Although it would be hard to determine the creme de la creme as you can't compare the different people as how do you measure success in all the different fields.

No -- I reject your premise.

If you went to college and learned logic, you would understand the fallacy in your argument. Just because a few people become famous without going to college (can you say Paris Hilton) doesn't mean they are smarter than those who go to college. And just because some people come out of college without a solid education doesn't mean that a degree is worthless.

That computer you are looking at: Do you know who designed it? college graduates. That operating system you are using: Do you know who designed it? College graduates (I know what you are thinking -- Bill Gates didn't graduate -- but he didn't build the operating system, either -- he bought it from someone who went ot college).

Most of the people I know who went to Uni landed up stacking shelves in the supermarket or sponging off mummy and daddy. I got no help...and I bought my first house at 19, and kept upgrading I have a great job...family and life...I worked my way up and asked for nothing....fair enough if they make it but if you ask me its just a extened holiday before they have to deal with life....but thats just my opion....
