I have signed a contract with a contracter to do some external repair on my home that says he doesn't give estimates and that no one in the business does this. All of my neighbors have rec'd estimates on their house repairs (hail storm damage). I think I should've rec'd an estimate. I also signed a contract - didn' tknow it was that at the time - thought it was just b/c he was out to the house and wanted me to sign the document for his records. I want to know if I can break the contract by just saying I'm going with someone else or if I am bound legally to have him as my contracter.

Don't let this guy do any work, signed contract or not. If he does not want to give you a written estimate he is not a legitimate contractor, licensed or not. Get another contractor to give you an estimate and then show the first guy you can get one. You could tell him your insurance will not pay for the repairs and you don't have the $, that should scare him away.

Check with your local contractor licensing agency but New York and Forida require all estimates and contracts to have a start date completion date and a PRICE so if your state is the same he can stuff his contract. Which is what you should tell him regardless. And he cant charge you if he hasn't done any work since his estimate doesn't include a price. However if you discover that this guy is not licensed in either of these states and the work is more than 1000.00 he has no legal recourse to collect payment since he wasn't supposed to be working in the first place.

If you didn't know what it was, why would you sign it? Tell him you will not allow him to do any work without an estimate - if he balks or hassles you, tell him you will call the Attorney General's office for your state and report him.

You are set up for a major fleecing with this guy.

That is a load of malarky. He doesn't want to give an estimate because he is going to charge you a lot.

Every contractor can usually give a rough estimate.
