Broken hearts need to mend themselves and it takes time.
Meanwhile, just be there for your friend. He/she will need someone to talk to. Don't judge and don't place blame on either person. Just listen. Also, plan activities that will take their mind off the sadness.
You're a great friend.

It seems to me that there are more hearts broken in the world that can't be mended, left unattended, what do we do? What would we do?

JoBu says to go to her, lay with her, lend her your shoulder and talk it over with her. Offer her some rum because it is such a nice drink, and try if the situation calls for it to get her to smile. Even if it is for a second, you did manage to break her shell a bit. Stay with her for as long as possible.
Rum Shots to unbreaking that heart!

Apply pressure to stop the bleeding then pump large volumes of quality alcohol in and find someplace with a disco ball and a seventies sound track. Works every time...

Well my best friend was once really down and I tried to remember something easy and cheap that she just loves but never gets for herself. I got her three boxes of bugles and a movie and it lightened her up that a) I remembered she loved bugles and b) I didn't spend the money for our electric bill on her with something expensive.

You and I sure seem to be going through some similar emotions. I won't pretend to know what it is you're up against. But if you can figure out the answer to this Q, I'll buy your book.

Let them talk to you, and make sure to eat something sweet like brownies or something. I hate being the shoulder people cry on...
