Close the damper. When you go to use a cold fireplace, get the draft going by burning some paper in it first.

i am guessing that ur talking about a down draft when the fire is on and ur getting smoke back in the house?( if not then just close the damper) if its the first case, then the chimney needs to be from the heightest point level over and nothing in its way for 10'........such as roof lines! if ur ok there, then make sure ur flue is large enough.....if all these r ok, the check to see if u crack a window does this stop it! if it does then u need to add a fresh air supply to the chimney....call ur local HVAC man..

First of all, Your chimney height needs to be at least 2-3feet higher than your roofline. Second, look around and see if your neighbors roofline (if their house is close) is higher than your chimney. Then check if trees or other growth is close to your chimney. I suggest if you cannot resolve this to have an expert take a look also. I battled this same problem for three months until I found out about stack hieght.

I assume you closed the flue. I only posted this 'cause you didn't mention it. Other than this, I don't know since my fireplaces have efficiency units inside them. If you don't get an answer from this board, go to your library and see if you can find out more before you go to a dealer since they tend to sell you anything just to make a sale, whether or not what they sell you will work for your set up.
