Precautions for stable iodine

Direct contact with skin can cause lesions, so it should be handled with care. Iodine vapor is very irritating to the eye and to mucous membranes. Concentration of iodine in the air should not exceed 1 mg/m³ (eight-hour time-weighted average). When mixed with ammonia, it can form nitrogen triiodide which is extremely sensitive and can explode unexpectedly.

Small amounts of iodine are necessary for proper thyroid functioning. That is why table salt is iodized. Ingestion of too much iodine can cause some short term thyroid problems, but the amount you got on your hands would not be enough to hurt you. Iodine is sometimes used as an a topical antiseptic. Do wash your hands good, however;as you do not want to ingest whatever you were working on in class.

I have no idea. Bromine burns, but iodine is not bad. In 2% solution it is used as a surgical scrub. I saw a girl spill liquid bromine on her hands and feet. She had large scars. If ammonia is added to iodiine it is explosive.
