Many years ago when employees were paid in cash, the paymaster came around and handed out envelopes with the pay it it. The companies often included other stuff such as announcements in the pay envelope. Most of that was akin to junk mail and was just tossed. If an employee was being terminated, a termination notice was included in the pay packet. These were often printed on pink paper so they wouldn't get tossed as just more junk. The term "getting a pink slip" has long survived the actual practice.
