Probably because most of the time they aren't actually interested in the game. They just like watching all the men!
But to be fair i'm sure there are a lot of girls who do understand it!
I never did when i first started watching, but then once you follow it a bit its easy to pick up!

I am both a girl and a huge football fan. I have been watching football games for as long as I can remember, and I understand the sport as well as anyone else. I know the positions, different plays, what's a penalty and how many yards it costs, the points awarded for different types of scores. And I know I'm not alone because most of my female friends understand football too. Of course, we're a bunch of southern, country girls so that might play a part in it too-our daddies expect us to know what a screen pass is, after all.

Have you actually tried? I'm a girl. I learned about football from my mother. I know more about football than 99% of the men. By the time I was in high school the football coaches were trying to recruit me to be a team manager.
If you seriously want to understand football, start by visiting this NFL site: www.nfl.com/features/rulebook Read the beginner's guide and football basics first and then keep reading, watching and asking.

I think girls can understand football just as well as guys. It's just that there are less opportunities for girls to play, so I think they take less of an interest in the game, as opposed to baseball/softball, basketball, or soccer, where there are more opportunities for them to play.

Because of chicks like that one annoying blonde lady who used to be on "The View". I started watching their Super Bowl preview once (wanted to get the ladies' perspective) and, not two minutes into their discussion of the game in general, she chimes in with, "Yeah, and what about the butts!?"

The ladies can understand football just fine, it's just that they usually haven't played it like the guys have. Thus, they don't hang in circles where they talk about it a lot and break down all the nuances of the game.
If you care, you can understand it.

You've obviously never met my sister, who knows more about football than at least 70% of the guys out there.

Never is such a strong word--I understand it completely bacause I played power-puff football in college. When I had an interest in playing it is when I learned about it.
