I bought pine wood but am not sure if it's the correct kind since it's kind of soft.

Pine Slats

You could use clear Douglas Fir in 1"x4".

DF is one of the strongest softwoods you can buy - it has a very high modulus of elasticity and is often specified for high load applications in beams and joists. DF is stronger than spruce, larch, southern or yellow pine, and far better than cedar or redwood.

Hardwoods are great where they will be visible, but you pay for their attractive grain lines.

Make sure the DF is clear, or at least it has small (< 1/4" diameter), tight knots to minimize any weak points in the slats.

Southern Yellow Pine has been the standard for bed slating.. Not White Pine. White Pine is too soft. SYP is a strong hard pine. generally requires special order in northern states.

Id say it would work unless you are a BIG person. Sure its cheaper, softer, and not oak. I think it would serve the purpose since you already bought it though.
